PhD course in Space Science

11-15 April 2011 at University of Copenhagen - organized and hosted by Space Science Center

Aim
To give PhD students an introduction to key areas of space science and, in turn, enable the students to put their own PhD project into perspective, as well as to catalyze interactions across research groups and institutes.

Content
The course will provide insights into topics in space science – in particular, Mars Research and Space Astrophysics, but other topics in space science will also be included. Lectures will feature two international capacities supplemented by local staff members:

Steven Squyres, NASA, who has been a leading figure in planetary exploration for decades (heavily involved in Mars missions, as well as the Voyager, Magellan, and Cassini missions).

Peter Jakobsen, ESA, who has been leading development and utilization of space telescopes, e.g. the Hubble Space Telescope and its successor James Webb Space Telescope.

Format
The course will consist of lectures in the mornings and hands-on activities (computer-based exercises, group work, problem solving sessions) in the afternoons. All lectures and classes will take place in the week 11–15 April. Some preparatory studies before the course, and some concluding studies after the course, will be required.

Credit
Approved active participation in the course will give 5 ECTS. Students may choose to carry out a project on a topic of the course and hand in a project report. In this case 7.5 ECTS may be obtained.

Who can participate?
The course is open to all PhD students in the natural sciences. For practical reasons, the number of participants is limited to about 20 students. There is no participation fee, but students must fund their own accommodation and travel.
